| Discovery Notes | We collected this sample in the North Apartments area of the UMass Amherst campus, near North Drive and North Thatcher Street. The North Apartments are located in the Northeasternmost reaches of the campus. The sample itself was from relatively damp soil, near a mulchbed and a sidewalk. The soil was situated beneath several maple trees, near a bicycle rack. Thus, the sample was collected from shaded, damp soil, and microorganisms may have been transported from adjacent areas by hitchhiking on bicycles or people. |
| Naming Notes | We named this phage in honor of Ben's pet budgie Loki, who passed away recently. "Bud" was a nickname sometimes used for her, and also acts as an abbreviation of her species's name (budgerigar). |
