Discovery NotesPhage created plaques that were around 4 mm in diameter. Plaques were clear, indicating lytic life cycle. When grown on plates in high concentration, overgrowth of bacterial culture occurs. Often plaques had a slight zone of even greater clearing at the edge, like a bull's eye, or target patter. Effect became more pronounced with further purification. Phage did not hold up well to Transmission Electron Microscopy.
Naming NotesPhage was named Snowflake due to difficulty working with specimen as time progressed. Capsids were broken in TEM, and showed lace-like patterns inside the confines of the structure, mimicking the patterns of snowflakes.
