Discovery NotesSoil sample was collected at 9:30am on 9-21-13 from a tomato garden approximately 6 inches from a tomato plant and taken from the depth of 30mm. The air temperature at the time of collection was 66 degrees F and the weather was sunny and dry. The soil was amended with compost and was dry and loose. After the enrichment process, we discovered two different sized plaques. Emma chose to isolate the small plaques while Jessica chose to isolate the bigger plaques. After a few isolations processes, the plaques started to vary in size. We then carried through all the experiments and discovered that our phage genomic DNA and electron microscope results were the same.
Naming NotesWhen Emma and Jessica still thought that they were isolating different phages, Emma chose to name her phage Tyma, a mixture of her and her boyfriend's name, and Jessica chose to name her phage Abreu, after her high school Biology teacher. After discovering the phage was the same, we combined the two names to create TymAbreu.
