Discovery NotesThis sample was taken from the underside of a grassy ridge located a few feet above the riverbank of India Point Park in Providence, RI. The soil was taken approximately an inch deep into the side of the ridge, which was about 5-7 inches below the grassy upper surface. The soil was dry, fine, and relatively loose. Plaques were observed after sample enrichment.
Naming NotesAlthough most restriction enzyme and PCR results suggest that this phage is in subcluster B1, some other results, such as the Xho1 and Bsu15I restriction enzyme cutting patterns, were inconsistent with previously-documented B1 phage. The name “Porklet” is a variation on “Hamlet,” which is a reference to the play containing the famous phrase “to [B1] or not to [B1].”
