Discovery NotesIsolated from wet soil near a downspout of a house, which was adjacent to the College of Charleston's School of Science and Math Building.
Naming NotesNamed after an endangered plant species found only in good longleaf pine habitat: Schwalbea americana. The endangerment status of this species has driven much of the federal management management of longleaf pine forests, which are at 3% of their pre-colonial range. Just as innocuous and easy to step on is Schwalbea americana, so innocuous are the bacteriophages doing war in our soils.
