Discovery NotesThe phage was collected at 1 pm on September 14, 2017. Approximately 37.5 mL of soil was collected outside of the Schapp Science Center at Hope College. The sample was collected in a small clearing surrounded by plants and covered with mulch. It was collected at two inches deep and the area was sunny. It was 73 degrees Fahrenheit (22.7778 degrees Celsius) and the humidity was 71%. The soil was moist, but not damp.
Naming NotesThe name for this phage comes from the word "selcouth" which is an old/middle english adjective meaning strange, unfamiliar, but marvelous. This course has been a whole new experience for me as my mindset changes from what it was during cookie cutter high school labs to what it needs to be for doing real research with organisms that might not follow all of the rules. Working with this phage has been a challenge for me, but fills me with wonder and joy when something works the way I wanted to, hence the name Selcouth.
