Discovery Notes | This phage was discovered in a soil sample from my brother Steve's garden in Millersville, MD, which is very close to UMBC where the work was done, as part of my role as a facilitator at the 2023 Phage Discovery Workshop. |
Naming Notes | I named the phage Mattawa because my brother lives on Mattawa Court, so the name reflects the location where the phage was found. I looked up the name and I found that Mattawa means "meeting of the waters" in Ojibwa. This seems appropriate, as the neighborhood where his home is located is very close to the Severn River. |
