Guesses for the Grand Challenge have been submitted, the winners have been notified, and I'm impressed and excited by the diversity of approaches taken to attempt to solve this problem. It should make for some excellent poster-browsing and an interesting Grand Challenge session at the 2013 SEA-PHAGES Symposium.
I recognize, however, that some schools are continuing their work and might not want to have the Unknown identities revealed to them yet, so...
SPOILER ALERT!
...
The phages that were shipped as Unknowns #1-15 are listed below, along with their current cluster designations. Points were awarded whenever a school correctly guessed the cluster of an unknown sample. Extra points were awarded if they also correctly identified the subcluster. In some cases, where guesses were of the form of "Either Cluster J or K", partial points were still awarded.
* Many schools identified unknown #2 as a Cluster I phage. It is possible that there was some mixup at our end and we sent the wrong thing or a contaminated sample. Regardless of whether or not we gave points for this Unknown, the results didn't change.
