Discovery NotesThe sample was collected underneath the bushes in the outdoor seating area behind Annenberg Hall (on the campus of the University of Southern California). The ambient temperature was 25 degrees Celsius. The soil was slightly damp, but rocky and with limited organic matter. The soil was collected an inch below the surface.
Naming NotesThere's a line from Sophocles's Antigone that goes: "She has not learned to bend before adversity."

I collected this phage during one of the many heat waves that hit Los Angeles, and the soil was extremely dry beneath the surface. My first attempt to collect a sample failed, as did many of my lab partners' attempts. For that reason, I chose to call the phage Adversity, since it managed to exist in spite of relatively unforgiving conditions.
