Discovery Notes | The soil containing this phage was collected on 9/6/2013, on Brown University's Pembroke Campus. |
Naming Notes | The original name for this phage was "Nicolas Phage," reflecting its ability to make a good gel better and a bad gel worse (referencing the common rule towards Nicolas Cage and movies). However, this name did not fit the naming guidelines set out by the HHMI. So, the investigator who discovered the phage had to improvise. |

Plaque Notes | The plaques were not completely clear, and possessed "halos," indicating that the phage most likely reproduced via lysogenesis. As well, at higher titers, the phage displayed "second death" ghost plaques. Fainter plaques appeared scattered across the plate, even though the plate was clearly a web plate. Further purification ensured that the lysate was not contaminated, so it was likely that the phage was killing bacteria early on in the infection process, allowing the plaques to be overgrown and killed again. |
