Discovery Notes | The phage Chama Mama is a lytic phage with a plaque diameter of 0.8mm. A clonal population of this phage was not obtained throughout the course of this research, even after three rounds of purification. Chama Mama also has DNA with no restriction sites for the restriction enzyme NspI. This phage produces accurate serial dilutions, but a high concentration of phage is needed to create a webbed plate. |
Naming Notes | A few close friends and I traveled to New York City to celebrate our high school graduations. On our trip, we visited a restaurant called Chama Mama because one of my friends really wanted to try it. After our meal, we were still starving due to the tiny portions that the restaurant provided. The name of my plaque is in dedication to this restaurant; although it may not have been an enjoyable meal, something good could still come from my friend's horrible dining suggestion. |

Plaque Notes | This phage produces a mixture of plaque sizes. After performing 3 rounds of purification, a clonal population was still not obtained due to at least two plaque diameters present on the plate. These sizes include some plaques with a 0.8mm diameter and some with a 0.2mm diameter. The original Chama Mama plaque size was 0.8mm, and this is the more prevalent size in most plates. |
