Discovery NotesThis soil sample was collected at approximately 4:40pm near the pond at LeTourneau University. Greenery was cleared near the sample site with a plastic spoon and a 1 inch wide and 1 inch deep hole was dug. 11 g of soil was collected in a 50 ml centrifuge tube, but 5 g of it was used for phage isolation. The soil was moist and dark and contained roots and grass. The weather was sunny with a clear sky and the temperature was 104°F. The coordinates for this sample are 32.46319° N, 94.72626° W.
Naming NotesFrom the famous 90’s sitcom “Seinfeld,” created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, the name “Costanza” comes from the character George Costanza, portrayed by Jason Alexander. In the show, Costanza is depicted as short and stocky, much like the phage we have seen so far.
