Discovery Notes | The soil was taken from outside of Valentine Hall at Benedictine University in Lisle, IL. The soil was moist due to the rain and snow that we had in the days prior to collection. The top layer was very soft and almost muddy. However, after digging 2-3 inches at 6:30 in the morning it got less wet and more frozen and harder. I used a spoon to dig about ½ pound of the dark and almost potting soil textured sample that also contained roots and some small pieces of wood. The plot of land used to be where a forest stood before it was turned over to develop the project of the apartments on campus. |
Naming Notes | I named my phage DexterDD because I loved watching the cartoon network shows about a little genius science boy named Dexter and his sister DD. |

Plaque Notes | Plaque diameter: 0.5 mm (millimeter) Plaque radius: 0.25 mm I had small phages on my bacterial plates that had a diameter of 0.5 mm (millimeter) and a radius of 0.25 mm (millimeter). Since the diameter and radius were so small, I needed a higher number of PFU to create a webbed plate. The plaques had a cloudy halo or outer edge to them and a clear center which suggests a lysogenic phage. |
