Discovery NotesWe found Eliud at the bank of a pond where we collected 5ml of soil. The dirt was very moist, and the surrounding grass was damp and soft. The sample contained debris of pebbles and small blades of grass. Weather conditions were hot and humid.
Naming NotesEliud Kipchoge is the first human to break the two-hour mark for a marathon. We chose the name Eliud because were are both runners, and finding the phage felt like running a marathon. Our first soil sample was no good. We then got a second sample and found Eliud. The first sample was like a pacer for Eliud in his marathon. The pacer left, and Eliud finished the marathon with record-breaking time.
