| Discovery Notes | The sample was taken from a zoo environment. Collection was conducted near the sea lion exhibit and there was a waterfall a near the collection site. We dug into the wetter soil past the top soil and a colony of ants had surfaced. After waiting a few moments for the ants to disperse, the soil was collected. Nearby vegetation also included fallen leaves, dispersed grass, and mulch wood chips. It was damp at the time and it was 76 degrees out and the humidity was at 45%. Before our collection, it had rained in the Highland Park area on Tuesday the 27th. Soil was stored in an airtight ziploc bag in the refrigerator. The sample was in transport from collection site to refrigerator for two and half hours in a slightly warm car (near 75 degrees). The sample was then stored in the fridge until lab day (3 days). |
