Discovery Notes | I discovered my phage from soil found near the edge of a wooded area, at the base of a tree. The wooded area was on Calvin University's property at DeWit Manor. I dug slightly so that the top layer of leaves, acorns, etc. did not get into the soil. The soil was very dry and had to be scraped with a stick before being able to get into my collection tube. 15mL of soil was collected. We were in the midst of a dry time, where it had not rained much at all, and not recently before collection. |
Naming Notes | I named my phage after 2 very special people in my life. The first part, Joy, is named after my God Daughter, Joy. She is so very special to me. Even though she is too little to understand what a phage is, I want to be able to give her something special in her name that will help people and the science community down the road. The second part, Ma, is a tribute to my great grandma, Ma, who made one of the biggest impacts on my life. She was my role model and who I aspire to be like, so I wanted to add her name. It's the idea that I aspire to be like Ma, and I want Joy to aspire to be like me. |

Plaque Notes | I had so many plaques, they were unable to be counted. One side of my plate had most plaques, while the other side had only a few phages. Plaques have rounded edges. The plaques were clear in the center, but the edges faded into more turbid. |
