Discovery Notes | This phage was collected from a planter in a courtyard at the University of Pittsburgh. On the day of the soil collection, 1/12/16, there was 3-4 inches of snow on the ground and the temperature haven't been above 30 degrees Fahrenheit for days at a time. Due to these weather conditions, it was challenging to collect the soil because I had to push the snow and the top mulch layer out of the way to get to the dirt. Once I got to the dirt, I realized it was frozen solids had to use a metal fork and spoon like a rake and shovel to collect my sample. This phage was found in a planter that had scrubs and trees that were healthy. |
Naming Notes | My phage's name is inspired by a "character" from Parks and Rec, a popular TV show starring Amy Poehler. LilSebastian is a pony that the entire town is obsessed with, but outsiders do not understand what the big deal is. Like the character LilSebastian, my phage is small and a big deal to me and the SEA-PHAGES community, even though outsiders may not understand why. |
