Discovery NotesThe soil I chose was from Lisle, Illinois here at Benedictine University. It was on the outskirts of the football field outside the gates. It was easily accessible and I used a clean spoon to dig it all out and get into it deeper since the top of the soil had a lot of small wood chips. I ended up having to get it twice because the first time I did not get enough soil, probably about ⅕ of a pound. It was dark brown with some small pieces of wood chips throughout the sample. I believe that since it was below wood chips and much deeper in the soil, I can find phage.
Naming NotesThe name Malakai came from my favorite TV series called “The Vampire Diaries”, where Malakai, or Kai, is an evil vampire with witch powers.

Plaque NotesThe plaques were Type 1 (circular edges, no fuzziness). Phage Malakai has a diameter of 1mm and a radius of 0.5 mm. Since the phage yields plaques consistently and isn't dormant for a period of time and it does not appear to be fuzzy and/or cloudy(hinting at a lysogenic phage), Malakai is a lytic phage.
