Discovery NotesA solid soil sample was collected at 10:31 AM on September 3, 2019 from the UNLV Community Garden. The sample was collected at an elevation of 1960 feet. The soil that was collected was 0.12 meters deep from the surface of the soil to the left of a growing beet plant. The texture of the soil was moist with a mud-like appearance, as it was recently irrigated. The soil was sandy and contained small pieces of gravel. The area where the soil was collected was not shaded. The collected soil did not appear to have a certain scent.
Naming NotesThe name "MarcoPolo" was based on the Italian merchant and explorer, Marco Polo. Similar to Marco Polo's efforts, we were tasked with finding a novel bacteriophage (a virus), and thought it would be a great fit.
