Discovery NotesThe soil sample was collected on August 23, 2022, at 10:21 A.M. CST by Briella Rose and Emma Livingston. The ambient temperature was 25°C and it was cloudy with 90% humidity, but it was not raining, although it had been raining for the past few days. The sample was collected from the border of garden by apartment 8c at Letourneau University, under a patch of mulch. The hole dug was 11cm long, 10cm wide, and 3cm deep. The soil was damp and loose, with pine needles and mulch mixed into it, and had ants and beetles crawling through it. Briella and Emma graciously donated the phage on a spot test plate to our lab group after several unsuccessful attempts by our group to get a phage.

NOTE: Phage Marlen was sequenced but it was 100% identical to the temperate phage Ibrahim, hence adding no new information to the database. For this reason, it was not necessary to keep it in the archive or submit its sequence to the GenBank database, else it would be duplicate data. It is interesting that Marlen, isolated in Longview, TX in 2022, is 100% identical to phage Ibrahim isolated in Oklahoma in 2017!
Naming NotesOur phage is based around resilience. We have been able to overcome a number of setbacks, because of this we named our phage Marlen from the Disney Pixar Movie Finding Nemo as that is a movie about Marlen overcoming countless setbacks and displaying a tremendous amount of resilience.
