| Discovery Notes | Soil samples were collected at Mer Bleue Bog, a protected environment, from the soil next to a tree, 2-3 inches deep in the ground. The soil was dark, wet, and rich in partially decomposed organic material. This area has a cool and consistently moist environment. These conditions are known to support microbial communities, which makes bog soils an interesting location for the isolation of bacteriophages. Genomic DNA was sequenced on an Oxford Nanopore Technologies MinION using R10.4.1 chemistry. The sequence assembled into one contig of 75,961 bp. BLASTn analysis showed 97% query coverage and 98.98% nucleotide identity to Mycobacterium phage Dumbo. Based on the high sequence similarity and the comparable genome size to related phages, this sequence likely represents a near-complete phage genome. |
| Naming Notes | I named my phage Natan. I got it from my friend's name Nathan, which I played on the word a little bit so it would be acceptable. This friend helped me a lot during my academic run, so I decided to name my phage after him. |
