Discovery Notes | - Collected on 08/31/2015 at 10:40 AM on the Johns Hopkins University Undergraduate Campus - Temperature: 82 F - Phage collection site was close to brick footpath (and therefore foot traffic), cement, small green shrubs, and trees and in direct sunlight - Soil was completely dry and sample was collected 2 cm from the top of the soil - There was no particular reason for choosing this collection site |
Naming Notes | When the phage morphology was examined during electron microscopy, the phage head resembled a hexagon. The head diameter and tail length were approximately 60 nm and 200 nm, respectively. The phage appeared similar to the molecular structure of a phenyl group (a 6-carbon hexagonal ring with 3 double bonds in resonance) attached to a long carbon chain. As a result, the phage was named Phenyl. |
