Discovery NotesThe soil sample was collected at about 4:50pm at the bottom of a steep grassy hill when it was raining slightly. There was a layer of dead leaves on the ground at the collection site, which was near several trees and bushes, with insects and roots in and around the soil sample. The 10-15 ml of collected soil, which was moist and claylike, was obtained by digging down two inches under the surface of the ground and putting the sample in a 50 ml conical tube.
Naming NotesOur group of three, Krista Andersen, Joseph Bowen, and Venecia Clayton, started as three separate groups. All three of us took separate soil samples, none of which produced a successful phage. We ended up as a group together, adopting a phage from another group's plate entirely. We concluded that persevering through those changes and other issues that came up during the process of isolating this phage warranted the name "Phortitude," spelled with a "Ph-" to make it more biology themed.
