Discovery Notes | The soil sample collected in which the bacteriophage was found was collected behind the Environmental and Biological Sciences building at Western Kentucky University. The sample was collected between the two greenhouses behind the building, but not within the greenhouses as the soil was not enriched. The soil was in dry conditions, with no clay or rock present. |
Naming Notes | When the phage was able to be viewed through Electron Microscopy, several observations were made regarding the state of the phage themselves. The tails were in tact, however some of the heads were destroyed and there were some examples of the phage DNA occurring outside the head of the phage. For this reason, the area around the intact phage appeared very "dirty" with debris of destroyed phage.I considered the name pigpen when the professor assisting me with the EM suggested that it reminded him of the Charlie Brown character "Pig Pen" who is characteristically dirty. |
