Discovery NotesA small soil sample was taken with a plastic spoon and placed into a Ziploc plastic bag. This occurred at approximately 12:15pm CST on August 25, 2016. The sample was taken from a grassy area next to a pond. It had rained two days prior to collection. The soil was moist, and the sample was drawn from a constructed hole approximately 2 inches deep.
Naming NotesThis phage was named Spontaneous16 because the word spontaneous can mean "occurring without apparent external cause." Early in the research process, it was observed that this phage throws off two different plaque morphologies, and the reason has not yet been discovered. The number 16 at the end represents the year it was discovered, 2016.
