Discovery NotesThe soil sample that I collected was from my front yard in Lombard, IL. The area that I collected it from was rocky and had plants growing sporadically. I chose this spot because it was convenient to collect from and is from a fairly new construction. It was summer so the temperatures were on the higher side but the soil was watered every single day. I used gloves and a shovel to dig about 4 to 5 inches into the ground and collect about a 1/2 lb soil sample. I sifted through it and removed larger rocks and bits of construction and was left with grainy soil with bits of plants. There definitely was moisture in the soil as condensation began to form on the plastic bag after an hour or two.
Naming NotesI chose the name Tailung because that is my leopard gecko's name, and he's named after the snow leopard from the Kung Fu Panda movies. I chose this name because my plaques with lytic phages were spotted and resembled the patterning on my leopard gecko.

Plaque NotesPlaque Diameter: 3 mm
Plaque Radius: 1.5 mm

Phage Tailung formed lytic plaques that were clear center and had a diameter of 3 mm and a radius of 1.5 mm. The temperature the phages grew best on was 22°C. This tells us that Tailung amplifies best at lower temperatures as opposed to higher ones. Phage Tailung is from the myoviridae family. Myoviridae phages have long, thick, contractile tails that are made up of a central tube surrounded by a contractile sheath.
