- sample collected on Gonzaga University campus across from the Jepson building
- outside temperature was 2 °C
- Half a foot of snow was removed to uncover the soil
- soil overturned through digging by hand and with a small shovel
- sample came from under a tree and soil sample was cold and frozen because of the winter
