Discovery Notes | Theodosia was discovered from a soil sample collected from a garden area on the left side of the road approaching the Chevron chemistry building on the University of Pittsburgh main campus. The soil collection occurred at 5:03 pm on Monday, January 9th, 2017. The temperature was 27° F and the sky was cloudy with little precipitation and less than one inch of snow accumulation. The soil was dark, wet, and loose. Some grass and bushes had been growing in the ground near the collection site, but had frozen because of the low temperatures. The soil also contained remnants of dried leaves. |
Naming Notes | I chose the name Theodosia for two reasons- As a child, I read a series of books which had a protagonist named Theodosia, a young girl who solves mysteries. I relate the process of investigating mysteries to the process of finding and isolating a phage. I also was inspired by the song, "Dear Theodosia" from the award-winning musical "Hamilton". The song is about the feeling of love and hope a parent has for their child, and I have a similar feeling of promise for my phage Theodosia because of what use it might be to the scientific community. |
