| Discovery Notes | The soil was dark brown to black in color and appeared damp with a smooth texture. The soil was soft and clumped easily with minimal debris present. The sample was rich in decayed plant matter, consistent with stream bank soil characteristics. Soil was collected near the Swem library. About two tablespoons of soil was collected from about half an inch down from the surface. |
| Naming Notes | This name provides a neat little analogy to the function of the phage. At first, after looking at my phage's TEM images its long tails and circular heads reminded me of the components we would use in introductory circuits courses in high school. Additionally, my parents suggested naming my phage after Vajra, the lightning bolt weapon used by the Hindu god of thunder, Indra. I realized that my phage struck the host Mycobacterium smegmatis, forming multiple plaques in the same way lightning hits the ground in multiple spots. Therefore, while taking the name Vajra and adding "-ms" in reference to our host M. smegmatis, I ended up with the name Vajrams! |
