Discovery Notes | At 8:06 am CET, August 25, 2020, I collected the soil sample from under a bush behind the Glaske Center of LeTourneau University. I removed the top foliage first, dug a hole 12 cm wide and 5 cm deep with a plastic spoon. Then I collected 12.5 mL of soil from the bottom of the hole. The soil was dark and loose, and the surrounding soil contained larvae and worms. The weather was 23 C (73 F), sunny and with a clear sky. |
Naming Notes | My lab partner, Jacob Pitman, and I chose the name Viatrix because it means traveler or voyager. The name is fitting since the phage's journey has begun, and we hope it has a long future ahead of it. The name also makes me think of how working with this phage is the beginning of a learning voyage of biology, in which we are the travelers. |
