Discovery NotesThere was a thunderstorm that uprooted an urban street tree. The soil was taken from a small ditch where the tree used to stand. The sample was taken at 8:47 a.m. EST on August 28, 2023. The soil can be characterized as dry and loose, surrounded by mulch that had fallen into the ditch.
Naming NotesMy parents were helping me move into my new apartment when the thunderstorm started. We were holed up inside, waiting for it to pass. It was a nice moment, a pause between my childhood and my adulthood. We noticed the fallen tree after the storm ended.
I chose the name GivingTree after one of my favorite childhood books, "The Giving Tree," to honor my childhood memories as well as the fallen tree.
