Discovery NotesFound in front of Cance Hall located in the Southwest Residential Area in University of Massachusetts Amherst. Located ~3 feet from the base of a small tree. The soil was frozen due to weather conditions at the time. When thawed, soil appeared to be somewhat damp. Light grass above the soil was scraped away before collecting soil samples.
Naming NotesThe name of a popular celebrity, Kanye West, was used as the inspiration and the group modified his last name to "Southwest" after the residential area in the University of Massachusetts Amherst where the soil sample containing the phage was collected.
