Discovery NotesSoil sample #1 was gathered outside of the entrance of UPMC Shadyside Hospital's Posner Tower on September 1, 2019 at approximately 2:35 P.M.

The soil was collected close to a sidewalk, next to some decaying leaves. It was moist.

The inside of bag fogged up, likely due to moisture contained in the soil, shortly after sample collection.

Original plastic bag ripped during bus commute back from collection site, scattering a portion of the sample asunder onto bus floor. So, a second containment baggie was used to prevent contamination.

Sample was stored in a dark, dry desk drawer in an air-conditioned room at approximately 13°C for 2 days prior to sample processing.
Naming NotesThe name "MissMayfly" was chosen as a mayfly was once described to the researcher as an organism that "is short-lived and only lives to pass on its genes."

This researcher and their friends found this description quite comical, and given phages' "purpose" of genetic transfer, it felt apt.
