Discovery Notes | When finding a sample, I simply went into my backyard to dig. I took a sample on a summer morning of moist soil from behind my shed. The sample was kept zipped up in ziploc bag and was brought from Sewell, NJ. to Philadelphia. The sample stayed in a dark corner of my dorm and was then brought to lab with me. When performing the first experiments on my sample, no phage was present. It wasn't until a previous protocol was followed that plaques became visible on my plates. The phage was then isolated and the DNA was purified. |
Naming Notes | I named my phage after my street name at home which is Belmont. I named it this because that is where all of my childhood memories took place and this is now like a new beginning in my life. I thought of it as something memorable. |

Plaque Notes | My phage is considered a lytic phage. This involved having clear plaques on the bacterial lawn. This means that when the DNA is injected into the bacteria cell and will lysate and more phage will be produced. The plaques were small in size. Approximately 1 micrometer in size. |
