Discovery Notes | The phage came from soil collected at the Beta Upsilon Chi fraternity near the flower bed by the bottom door on the west side of the house. The soil was taken from about an eighth to a quarter of an inch below the surface. The soil sample was like a fine powder with a uniform, dark brown color. The sample contained a decent amount of organic matter and was quite wet because it had rained the night before I collected it. |
Naming Notes | I named the phage GabesDiscovery because of the way it made me feel when I found it. After seeing I was successful with direct isolation, I felt like a whole new world was opened up for me. Before this lab, I never had performed anything like this. It was new and exciting. It made me feel like I was an explorer during the Age of Exploration. |

Plaque Notes | The plaques are quite faded and vary in size. This most likely indicates that the phage is temperate. This is because temperature phages undergo the lysogenic cycle which prevents some of the phages from infecting the bacteria. Looking at the plaques collected throughout multiple labs, the plaques remained faded, but the variance between the sizes of the plaques greatly decreased as the phage was put into more controlled environments. |
