Discovery NotesI hiked through the woods of the Sourland Mountain Reserve and found a special location called Devil's Half Acre. An extension of the Pine Barrens Jersey Devil Legend, this site consists of very large boulders left over from glacial erosion and are said to be a second home for the Jersey Devil, a supposedly horse-headed biped with leathery wings and a "blood curdling scream".
Naming NotesJerseyBadland was named after the state in which it was found, in light of the disaster caused by Hurricane Sandy. Originally, I had thought of naming the phage after the Jersey Devil, because the phage was isolated in a region of the Sourland Mountain Reserve called Devil's Half Acre, a site with loose connections to the Jersey Devil legend of the Pine Barrens in South NJ. The Pine Barrens are sometimes called the "Badlands" of NJ, so rather than call it JerseySourland, I chose JerseyBadland. "Badlands" is also a song by the famous NJ native, Bruce Springsteen.
