| Discovery Notes | Sample description: Collected from soil (6 cm depth), damp due to recent rain, at a duck pond shoreline with an abundance of duck and Canada goose feces. The sample was slightly moist and medium brown/grey. Nanopore sequencing results: PinkQuack genomic DNA was sequenced on an ONT Minion, R10.4.1 chemistry. The sequence was assembled into contigs 1 and 2 of 2375bp and 3758bp, respectively. Contig 1 had 99% query cover and 87.75% identity to phiScoe3, and contig 2 had 100% query cover and 97.05% identity to Endor2. These two phages are related to phiCAM (BD3) and Celery (BD3), respectively. Contig 3 was 11,191bp and had 96% query cover and 97.18% identity to CallinAllBarbz (FP), an Arthrobacter phage, and we hypothesize this contig arose from contamination or misreads of a phage sequenced in the same flow cell. |
| Naming Notes | Named after a duck, Pink Quack, from a nostalgic childhood television series, Peep and the Big Wide World. The show is set around a duck pond, similar to that where my phage was discovered. Pink Quack carries herself with great confidence and my phage certainly takes after her strength. |
