Discovery NotesThe sample came from under a rock in a rain collection pit from the Seven Oaks apartments in Wesley Chapel, Florida. The soil was sampled about one inch deep and around 7:20 am eastern time on 09/01/2022. The soil was very moist, almost hard mud, surrounded by an abundant amount of green moss, and rocks. Green and brown anole lizards are frequently covering the pit. Green grass, clovers, and weeds grow in the pit.
Naming NotesI chose to name my phage in Greek, “Theïkós” which translates to, “Godlike” in English. The purpose of naming my phage in Greek was to pay homage to the founder of bacteriophages, Felix D’Herelle, and to his naming of “phages,” which means “to eat” in Greek. I call it “Godlike,” because bacteriophages are the single most abundant biological entity in the biosphere. Phages are everywhere, all the time, yet can not be seen by the human eye. If you look closely enough, phages cover our entire globe, constantly evolving and adapting, and yet most individuals are unaware of their presence. Their abundance and invisible presence are almost like a God.
