Discovery NotesThe soil was collected from a cornfield farm in Old Town, Maine on August 24, 2025 by Dr. Sally Molloy. The enriched sample produced a very small cloudy plaque. BaradDur was ultimately isolated from this plaque after seven rounds of purification.
Naming NotesBaradDur was named after Barad-dûr, the Dark Tower from The Lord of the Rings. The name reflects its tall Siphoviridae tail, with the phage head resembling the “eye” at the top of the tower.
