Discovery NotesThe soil sample was taken near a pile of Pittsburgh's finest cigarette butts, a few feet from a trash can on Flag Staff Hill. It was a sunny day, a bit brisk for September, and the soil was hard and dry.
Naming NotesThe word "Damri" means "elephant" in Khmer, the language of Cambodia. I spent some time living in Cambodia and my experience there shaped my understanding of life. It made me less afraid to try new things and explore a bit out of my comfort zone. I'm not sure I would have taken this course, which is very different from anything in the realm of Theoretical Mathematics, if not for my eye-opening séjour in Cambodia. The word "Lapideas" means "stone" in Latin, as does the name "Alan" (my father's name) in Celtic. My mother is also "my rock" so this part of the phage's name is to dedicate its discovery, in part, to my parents.
