Discovery Notes | Soil was collected from a flowerbed outside of the William Pitt Union. There were various types of plants present in this flowerbed including flowers, bushes and a tree. The temperature of Pittsburgh at the time of collection was around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. It had not rained for multiple days so the ground was very dry. The area the sample was collected in was under a tree which provided shade and a little moisture. There were worms in the sample collected but the worms were not put into the experiment. The soil was slightly damp and was easily compactable. ElvioleKelyse was found in a direct isolation plate with only one plaque that had formed. This plaque was of one morphology (small and clear) and only took two rounds of purification to isolate the phage. |
Naming Notes | ElvioleKelyse is a combination of 4 names: Elvia, Cole, Kenzie and Alyssa. All of these people are very special in my life so I felt my first scientific discovery should be named after those who are most important to me. |
