Discovery NotesThe collection took place under challenging conditions: the soil was frozen due to snowfall the previous day, and the weather was extremely cold, requiring scraping to obtain the sample. This area was not adjacent to any specific building, tree, or bush, and the ground was not particularly mulchy or muddy. The sample was taken from a relatively open area near the side of a house.
Naming NotesWe chose the name Hamherst due to the location where we collected the soil sample—UMass Amherst. The name combines "Hadley" and "Amherst," the neighboring towns where UMass is located. This blend reflects both the physical origins of the phage and our connection to the university.
