Discovery Notes | The samples were collected from the edge of a man-made pond that is a combination of run-off rainwater and pipe-born water. The samples were pulled directly from the cluster of Creeping Mint around the body of water. The soil quality was very wet, dark, and mud-like. The Creeping Mint itself was not wet as it had not rained that day, but they were very green and springy like they had been absorbing plenty of water. The area receives constant sunlight as nothing is blocking the light. Grass and other wetlands plants share the area, but the samples were collected from the middle of the field of Creeping Mint. I collected in each tube 2-5 strands of varying length and some soil was included in the samples. |
Naming Notes | Over the course of the semester, my phage and I have gotten a lot of time to get to know each other. There were many times that I was very frustrated with my phage. We have a rather one-sided relationship, my phage just gets to eat bacteria and form plaques, while I have to do and be everything else. It can be rather frustrating being in such a parasocial relationship with my phage, but then one night, while working on my lab notebook, I watched a movie. That might have been, again frustrated, as my phage was just sitting in the incubator, doing the bare minimum, but when I found this movie, it finally made it all click for me and gave me a new perspective on my phage. After I watched the Barbie movie, the name for my phage finally came to me. Justken. A name that encapsulates the relationship that we had formed over the past few months. She was everything, he was Justken. Barbie has a great day every day, Ken just has a good day when Barbie looks at him. I am Justken’s long-term long-distance low-commitment casual girlfriend. |
