Discovery NotesThe phage was extracted from soil from Columbia Bottom Conservation Area, St. Louis, MO. The semi moist soil was surrounded by sunflowers, prairie grasses, and little shrubbery. No animal activity was observed near the soil, except for pollinating insects.
Naming NotesThe Loki half of the name is inspired by the Norse god of mischief as well as the Marvel character of the same name. In both the comics and the myths, Loki is a trickster, and this reminds me of how this phage from the soil sample once resulted in a cloudy plaque in a spot titer that appeared to be overgrown which usually implies a temperate nature. However, all other plating of the phage with the host lawn has appeared to yield plaques which lack turbidity, and the "cloudiness" was never observed again for the remainder of the lab. The other half of the name references "Deoxys", a mythological extraterrestrial Pokemon. In the lore of the Ruby and Sapphire Pokemon games, the Psychic type Deoxys was a virus originating from an extraterrestrial planet which mutated into a sentient lifeform due to peculiar cosmic radiation.
