Discovery Notes | The soil was obtained near a sidewalk proximal to the Yuengling Center at USF. About 1/4 of an inch was dug to expose darker, more organic soil than the top layer of soil. There were sticks and leaves on top of the soil. The weather outside was dry when the soil was collected; there has not been rain for three days prior to collecting the soil. |
Naming Notes | Montez means "to climb" in French, which is a word that sums up my experience of isolating and purifying the phage from my sample. The beginning of the process to obtain an isolated phage population that was pure was a challenge as I did not have experience with completing scientific procedures within a lab, especially with aseptic technique. As I progressed in the procedures, I gained experience and confidence with the scientific procedures, increasing my competence and making them virtually second nature to me. |
