Discovery NotesTaken from the soil of flowerbeds around the fountain of Washington Park. The soil was moist from having recently been watered. The soil was loose but not sandy, and it smelled like organic compost. Only the exposed topsoil was taken, nothing below the surface of the dirt. The area taken from was shaded by the afternoon sun.
Naming NotesThe name from this phage comes from a Spanish word meaning “speckled”, refering to the variable size of the plaques formed on the plates we made. There is nothing implicit or definitively about it, just the general appearance of the plaques.

Plaque NotesPlaque size is variable, more so, than other groups we worked with, it seems. The sizes ranged from 0.2 to 1.2 mm. In dense clearings, the reflective texture of the plaques is wavy. The plaques are clear, not turbid. Tail length from EM is approximately 630nm, capsid diameter is approximately 65nm.
