Discovery NotesThe soil was damp from near a runoff pipe by the base of willow tree roots in a nature conservation park. A hole about 1 cm was dug into the soil, full of moss rhizoids. 1 mL M. foliorum and 0.25 mL 1M CaCl2 was poured into the hole. The hole was loosely covered with soil and left for three days. The soil was removed and a sample was dug out of the hole about 1 cm deep. A previous sample taken from the same site did not contain bacteriophages.
Naming NotesThis bacteriophage was named by Peter Jobson. Originally called ScalpMold, ScalpMud was renamed to avoid confusion. The new name fondly pays homage to the fetid soil from which ScalpMud was carved.
