Discovery Notes Sample Conditions:
-High light exposure
-Soil pH of 6.5
-High Moisture
-Temperature:23 degrees Centigrade
-Location: formerly submersed pond bottom that was being drained.
Found during late summer in between the exposed strata of dark pond sediment full of decaying organic matter and a layer of heavy clay that were at the water's surface level in a recently dug channel that was draining a storm water management pond at James Madison University's Arboretum during a rerouting of the stream it feeds in to. The sample was taken at the water's edge and in that small pool that was left there was a high concentration of dark catfish and three other notable varieties of smaller fish: one was green, one was silver, and the third was a dark brown and gray color. The channel has since been filled in to facilitate the creation of another pond in the same spot as before as a part of the stream restoration project that was completed in the fall of 2015.
Naming Notes The name Schneehund refers to the nickname of my Yellow Labrador Retriever, Nilla, that looked as white as snow when she a puppy, but has since grown darker. I was reminded of this when looking at the plaques backlit by the sunlight and seeing the gradation of color from the bright plaques to the darker rings and bacterial lawn.
