Discovery Notes | Bacteriophage Webbington was extracted from soil located in a field of soy bean plants. The soil was particularly dry and compacted. On the day of extraction, the temperature was relatively high, approximately 32 degrees Celsius (89 degrees Fahrenheit). Additionally, humidity levels exceeded seasonal averages. |
Naming Notes | The name "Webbington" was awarded to this bacteriophage because the webbed plate produced from a serial dilution and plaque assay of its phage lysate was particularly ideal. |

Plaque Notes | Bacteriophage Webbington produces small, clear plaques about 3 mm in diameter. These plaques appeared on plates of bacterial lawns of Gordonia terrae with PYCa CB/CHX growth media of a serial dilution with a dilution factor of 10^-5 incubated at 28ºC for 48 hours. These results indicate that bacteriophage Webbington's biology most closely aligns with that of a lytic phage. Lytic phages only undergo the mandatory lytic life cycle, lysing (killing) surrounding bacteria. |
