Wildcat's 3' overhang is included at the left end of the genome.
This is because in the early days of mycobacteriophage sequencing, 3' overhangs were often reported at the left end of genomes. This is true for L5, D29, TM4, and others. At some point, we decided to put 3' overhangs at the right end because then you're representing one of the two real strands of DNA completely. But some phages got grandfathered in with left-end 3' overhangs, since their genomes were already submitted to GenBank by the time we made the switch.
That explains why Wildcat's overhang is at the left end. It doesn't explain why only 10/11ths of the overhang is at the left end. That seems to have been an error in creating the final fasta file. |
